Spazju Kreattiv is today showing the Oscar-nominated film Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri.

The third film from Irish screenwriter-playwright-director Martin McDonagh (In Bruges, 2008; Seven Psychopaths, 2012) channels a modern, female variant of the classic hero in a showdown-style performance worthy of the Western genre. It tells the story of a strong, restless and complex woman who is dealing with grief and rage, and who is ready to test the fabric and limits of the law in the vein of John Wayne, Marlon Brando and Edward Montgomery Clift.

When Mildred (Frances McDormand), a mother driven to the edge by her daughter’s unsolved murder, mounts three scathing billboards directed at the inefficiency of small town authorities, she instigates a showdown with the town’s revered chief of police, William Willoughby (Woody Harrelson) and his immature second-in-command, Officer Dixon (Sam Rockwell).  With pride and reputations hanging in the balance, the confrontation quickly escalates into violence.

The film, certified 15, is being screened today at 7.30pm at the St James Cavalier cinema, with a repeat on Saturday at 8.30pm. For tickets, visit www.kreattivita.org or call 2122 3200.
