A spectacular fireworks display will shoot off tonight, on the eve of the feast of St Lawrence, patron saint of Vittoriosa.

This pyrotechnic show is now in its ninth edition and has progressed in leaps and bounds, with the Orzella Fireworks of Italy joining the event six years ago to provide its own firework designs.

A series of colourful displays will be let off from a huge barge moored some 200 metres between the promontories of Vittoriosa and Kalkara in the Grand Harbour.

The programme includes a mix of pyro-musical displays synchronised to different scores, traditional fireworks, including the multi-break crackered shells (known as murtali tal-beraq in Maltese), and single-firework colour shots, including the multi-break coloured shells (murtali tal-kulur).

The first display will be let off at 10pm with the programme for the evening expected to last one hour.

The suggested best viewing location is the Vittoriosa promontory, down by the seaside, close to the Regatta Club.

As a prelude to the fireworks displays, festive band marches by Our Lady of Mount Carmel Band of Balluta will take place from 8.30pm in Vittoriosa’s main square.
