On Tuesday, I was about to leave my garage on my bike when, on the ground, I noticed a small white animal with very little hair. I thought it was a hedgehog but then, seized by remorse, I stopped the bike, lifted my visor and approached. To my surprise, it was a little kitten, possibly abandoned by its mother. I immediately put it in a box with some knitted wool to keep warm and put the bike in the garage. Priorities had changed now.
I made a round of phone calls to ask if anyone had seen the mother of this creature but no one was able to give me information, so I called a friend of mine, a veterinarian, who immediately advised me to give her milk powder to avoid dehydration. I then went to a pet shop to buy everything needed and got to work.
I contacted the Animal Welfare Department who recommended I get hold of Emergency Animal Rescue. I insisted they speak to each other and let me know how to resolve the situation. This was 11am. At 2pm, I contacted the same person and, in a less friendly tone, I asked if there was any news. The lady kindly asked Animal Rescue to contact me urgently and a few minutes later a man told me over the phone that they could not take charge of the kitten because it was not injured and there was no threat to its life.
He suggested I put the cat back where I had found it and its mother might turn up. I replied that I could not let it die on the street. He told me it would be a noble gesture if I took it to my house. Their problem was solved. I wonder why I have to pay taxes to fund those who do not do their job properly?
The kitten has now found a wonderful family. I take this opportunity to thank Moira Formosa and her husband Kris for helping me in this matter. I delivered Gennarino (this is the name we gave it) and they said he immediately began to drink milk.
I hope it will have a happy existence. I have never considered myself a true defender of animals but I showed those who only talk that having a big heart is worth more than 1,000 ideals!
