A local warden knocked on my door the other day asking me to remove my vehicle parked in the main road in order to make way for workers who were building a seven-course boundary wall at Dock 1. I had never before seen a fraction of the workers that were present on that morning to build this unnecessary wall, which has the same purpose as its two predecessors that were built in the two years since the project started.

I found one of the architects heading the project who explained that it is a temporary safety measure and will also keep work going on at Dock 1 out of sight.

Fifteen years ago, the original stone boundary wall was replaced by four courses of stone and two-metre high metal gates on top. It was also a temporary safety measure... and it lasted nine years. Apparently, the residents were afraid that their children would jump over and get hurt.

I asked the architect why they did not have seven-course brick walls installed as a safety measure along every promenade on the island instead of low metal railings through which children could fall seven storeys, which is the height here. They were only following instructions, he replied.

We were desperate for action. However, this is the most insulting act of all in the waterfront upgrading project. We were delighted when the first wall came down and are now faced with a third, most horrific replacement.

We were also happy when they removed the trees but their replacements never arrived. Most also welcomed the new paving but are now left with no parking space. Again, we were never informed but bluntly faced with it one fine morning. It almost looks like a tribute to the old original one that Labour had installed!

What next? This is certainly not the change I voted for.
