I attended the Malta Military Tattoo on October 8 and thought it a splendid spectacle.
Having been last year I was disappointed that the lighting had not been improved. It is such a pity that such a good show should be marred by incorrect lighting. During the first half of the show, particularly, there was a blinding light in the left far corner of the arena, which was directed straight into one’s eyes. This made it impossible to see what was going on.
The bright lights along the sides were not helpful. In all theatres the spotlights and other lights are projected from above or behind the spectators not directed at them.
The lighting was also not uniform. For example, the commanding officer standing in the front of the arena nearest to the audienc appeared to be wearing a black topee. I remarked on this to my husband and we thought this unusual. It was only when the officer moved forward into the light that we realised that his topee was white like the rest of his company.
The irregular lighting also affected the viewing of the splendid gymnasts.
It is such a good show. I hope that in the future the lighting will be improved and that there is a little less volume from the loudspeakers.
It really is a great show and it could be even greater!
