Babies are lovely. They’re as cute as a button, give meaning to life and, at least till they get a bit older, they don’t argue with you. Well, they can’t talk anyway. And that could be a problem because their only means of communication is crying – and you can’t tell whether they’re crying because they’re tired, hungry, in pain or just being plain naughty.

And the worst bit is when you can’t get them to sleep. Ask any parent and they will tell you suffering, sleep-deprived tales of singing lullabies at two in the morning, arguing with the better half about whose turn it is to get up and see to the baby, and midnight snacking – well, since they’re up, they might as well tackle that tub of ice cream. The sugar-coated guilt will come later.

The days of sleepless nights might soon be over though. St Petersburg-based product designer Lana Agiyan has come up with the Bubble Baby, a bed for babies that is so comfortable it will make parents jealous.

The Bubble Baby is a transparent vacuum-thermoformed and blow molded baby bed. Agiyan says that the design is inspired by the nevalyashka, a traditional Russian tumbler toy that has been around for centuries.

Agiyan’s modern take on the nevalyashka has a 15kg Plexiglas base that acts as a weight centre – this means you can rock the bed in any direction up to a 17˚ angle, and it will return to an upright position. This makes a gentle rocking movement that will have the baby sleeping before you can say, “Sleep, baby, sleep.” And when nap time is over, you can fill the Bubble Baby with water and it will double up as a bathtub.

The bed can be used for babies up to five months old. And when they are too old to sleep and bathe in it, it makes for a great toy. You can even try and eliminate some of the mess in the kids’ room by using it as toy storage.

Bubble Baby is hypoallergenic. It is anti-odour and self-cleansing – it is coated with a special liquid polymer containing nano-titanium dioxide which, when exposed to sunlight, degrades dirt and air pollution and also heals scratches which can potentially gather dirt.

The mattress inside is pure wool and is stuffed with buckwheat husks, a natural material that is antibacterial and antifungal.

And while your baby sleeps, you can get some rest yourself.
