Multidisciplinary contemporary artist Victor Agius is today giving a live performance at Iniala5 Galleries in Valletta in collaboration with composer Mariella Cassar Cordina, who will present her musical piece L-Għabex.

This performative piece will be Agius’s first in Malta, following his previous performances: Pulverem in Gozo (2010) and Pulvis in Zagreb, Croatia (2014).

Composer Cassar-Cordina will play the violin and will be accompanied by Hungarian musician Toth on the viola.

The three artists form part of Ars Vitae Ensemble which was set up in Gozo in 2009. They work mainly on interdisciplinary projects fusing contemporary art, music and literature to create a unified medium.

Agius is currently holding the exhibition Terrae at the same gallery. His works are linked together through the material of clay and show how the artist is influenced by the Ġgantija Temples and the Xagħra Stone Circle.

Ceramic and mixed media sculptures from ongoing series Mother and Genesis form the body of the exhibition.

Local soil, clay and sand also feature in Agius’s large scale paintings and collages that often also include found objects, roots and twigs.

The exhibition will give a glimpse into the artist’s process of creation through the inclusion of some works on paper. These are conceptual studies that then lead to the creation of abstracted sculptures, using both drawing and the application of soil and clay.

Visitors will also be able to see video documentation from an interdisciplinary performance with interventions in sculpture by Agius and an original contemporary musical piece Ġgantija I by Cassar Cordina with lyrics by Immanuel Mifsud. This event was held during the summer solstice of 2013 at Ġgantija Temples.

The performance will be held today at 8pm at Iniala5 Galleries, Old Treasury Street, Valletta.  The exhibition runs at the same gallery until Saturday. Opening hours: Monday to Friday 10am to 2pm and 4 to 7pm; Saturdays from 10am to 2pm. For more information about the artist, visit www.victoragius.com.
