Just picture this: the Labour Party organises a competition and the winner gets to spend a day with Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi.

Moreover, the winner, presumably a Labourite wanting a reduction in water and electricity rates, will get the chance to see his proposal implemented on the day.

This is a fictitious scenario but a spokesman for Dr Gonzi said the Prime Minister would welcome any initiative by other political parties that helps people “appreciate the office he holds”. Be Prime Minister for a Day is a competition organised by the Nationalist Party on the lines of popular reality show The Kardashians. But instead of spending a day in the life of American socialite Kim Kardashian, the winner will spend a day with Dr Gonzi and have access to the Office of the Prime Minister.

The spokesman replied with a flat “no” when asked whether this blurred the boundaries between party and state.

“The activity is aimed at providing an insight into the role of Prime Minister. Throughout the day, it is envisaged that Dr Gonzi will carry out visits and meetings related to both his role as Prime Minister and as leader of the Nationalist Party,” the spokesman said.

And if the PL or any other political organisation held a similar competition the Prime Minister would welcome it.

Perhaps it is unlikely the Prime Minister will have to entertain such a request from his political rivals but he may have some odd proposals to contend with on June 19 when the competition winner joins him for an action-packed day.

One of the ideas suggested by an interested youngster is to “make Comino the Maltese equivalent of Ibiza”.

More than 1,500 people have applied to the PN and three finalists will be chosen on Friday by the party. The winner will be chosen on Saturday by a panel of journalists.
