The ascendancy of the media in the last quarter of a century has conditioned the Maltese and European (not to say the global) mindset.
To stand up for Christian values which have characterised our dear homeland for nearly two milleniums is often considered bigotry and intolerance. European moral relativism is gradually poisoning our ethical principles.
In this context, a strong and refreshing voice for truth, often solitary and quite unfairly hacked down, is that of Gozo Bishop Mario Grech who has fearlessly and consistently championed the cause of moral uprightness as enlightened by the Scriptures. As rights are more frequently encompassing dubious moral positions, Grech has voiced his serious concern against divorce, abortion and IVF manipulation.
Our duty as Catholic citizens is to adhere to civil law but never in disregard of Divine Law.
Indeed, our words and actions should always show an umlimited reserve of humane sensitivity and compassion. Nonetheless these endearing qualities are being frequently misplaced and misquoted to justify abuse and rampant self-seeking. Time has come to heed Grech’s rational teaching before it’s too late to discover that knowledge and well-being we have exchanged for shadows and for prosperity and freedom we have got slavery and servility.
