Estudio de Danza is a creative hub for all lovers of Spanish dance. The studio is committed to bringing out each student’s full potential to develop dancers of the highest standards with strong emphasis on artistic quality.
The centre is led by Deborah McNamara, the founder of Spanish dance in Malta. Deborah’s expertise also stretches overseas as she is a fully qualified Spanish Dance Society Senior examiner, touring worldwide.
Estudio de Danza follows the training system of the Spanish Dance Society, the world’s largest organisation for the advancement of Spanish dance in all its forms.
Spanish dancing is unique in that each of Spain’s16 regions has developed its own distinctive style of folk dance, the most renowned being flamenco from Andalucía. Apart from regional and flamenco, Spanish dancing also encompasses Escuela Bolera (School of Classical Spanish Dance), which developed in the 18th century and Estilizada (Theatrical Spanish Dance), a style of dancing performed by the major dance companies in Spain.
The centre will also offer open flamenco classes for more experienced dancers under the tutelage of Bettina Von Brockdorff, who graduated from the Centro de Baile in Jerez, Spain, specialising in flamenco dance.
Estudio de Danza’s children’s classes, Niños, provide a stimulating environment where children learn to express themselves through rhythm and musicality with basic zapateado (footwork) palmas (claps) and palillos (castanets), with emphasis on poise and stance. This is a great alternative to pre-ballet, especially for those children who display a theatrical temperament. Studied alongside ballet, Spanish dance helps to develop a strong back, co-ordination, musicality and an elevated sense of style.
