It was a year ago today that two men escaped from the window of a truck perching precariously over the underlying road when it broke through the railings on Ġużè Ellul Mercer bridge in St Julians.
A green iron railing was the only thing that had kept the hanging truck from falling five storeys onto the road below. The light commercial vehicle, a Toyota Dyna, belonging to an aluminium supplier was driving along the main artery towards Paceville when it skidded on the bridge just before the tunnels.
This close shave with a tragedy has at least led to some good: the railing along the bridge was since been replaced by a steel restraint system making the road safer for motorists.
