The owner of this boathouse must have thought its secluded location near Golden Bay meant he could expand it without anyone caring. It now looks more like a villa than a boathouse, with stairs leading to two rooms on top.

The Malta Environment and Planning Authority confirmed that enforcement order 332/10 was issued against the property in 2010 when a beach room on top of a garage, concrete stairs, and a utility room at the back were built without planning permission. The case status was listed as “pending at enforcement officer” on the Mepa website yesterday. Saviour Galea was listed as the contravener.

The property is located in a picturesque cove in Rdum il-Majjiesa It is not accessible by road.

A Mepa spokesman added that enforcement order 87/10 was also issued in 2010 for the construction of a room at another boat-house nearby.

In the election campaign, the Nationalist Party pledged an am-nesty for some building irregularities pre-dating 2008 that did not affect the rights of neighbours. Concessions on minor development irregularities were granted recently by the planning authority through a legal notice mirroring the PN’s pledge.

Last month, the Government Property Department removed illegal structures at Victoria Lines that had been highlighted by The Times.
