Every Gozitan family is receiving a visit by a certified eco-trainer, providing information on energy and water efficiency, the use of renewables and proper waste separation as part of awareness campaigns to drive the Eco-Gozo message home.
Eco-Gozo is a comprehensive approach towards quality development that incorporates environmental, cultural and socio-economic sectors, which have an impact on the island. It is a sustainable development strategy, implemented through the strong involvement of the community, through a number of initiatives and educational campaigns.
The first step included the adoption of the Eco-Gozo Action Plan 2010-2012, based on four main pillars that include the economy, environment, society and identity. It identified 80 proposals for the three-year period, which have included afforestation initiatives and the creation public recreational spaces.
The cleaning of rainwater harvesting dams in valleys has resulted in an increase of an annual 43 million litres of capacity, while five kilometres of rubble walls have been restored.
