The Roman Empire is commonly acknowledged as developing sewers, the alphabet, roads, underfloor heating, concrete, as well as the calendar on which our modern time is based on. One of the lesser known achievements of the Roman Empire is that it inspired the civil law system, which is still the basis for practically all of the legal systems in continental Europe and in South and Central America.

The legal system perpetrated by the Romans has remained largely untouched until the Napoleonic Code was established in 1804. Maltese law has followed a similar path with our Civil Code still largely representing the French Code.

In 2016 the law of obligations in the French Civil Code was considerably amended and is considered to be the deepest overhaul of French contract law since the establishment of the Napoleonic Code. The French experience should give rise to a local debate as to whether it is time to revise the law of obligations in the Maltese Civil Code.

With this in mind, Ganado Advocates have invited Jean-Francois Adelle, a partner at the French law firm, Jeantet, who will be delivering the keynote presentation at Ganado Advocates’ fifth Banking and Finance Law Seminar. Other topics to be covered during the event include presentations on whistleblowing within the banking industry, finreg and legal issues in cross-border lending scenarios.

The seminar will be held on Thursday from 1.30 to 5.45pm at Le Méridien St Julian’s Hotel & Spa. For more information, visit www.ganadoadvocates.com.
