Between January and the end of September last year, 83 babies were born to mothers under the age of 18.

Health Minister Joseph Cassar told Anthony Agius Decelis (PL), that of these newborns, 19 had mothers under the age of 16.

Answering a question by Nationalist MP Ċensu Galea, Dr Cassar said a total of 31 under-16s died while receiving treatment in hospital in 2008. In 2009 the number was 30.
