Almost 700 new nautical licences have been issued this year alone, confirming the ever-growing boating and yachting pastime in Malta, Transport Minister Joe Mizzi said yesterday.

Currently, over 13,000 small boats are registered with Transport Malta, Mr Mizzi said during the launch of the seventh edition of the BOV Valletta Boat Show.

Sleek motor yachts and the latest cutting-edge marine electronics and accessories will be displayed at the boat show to be held between September 26 and 29 at Boilers’ Wharf, Senglea.

The latest in powerboats, sailboats and engines as well as nautical gifts, services and apparel will be exhibited during the four-day event, allowing the public to compare makes and models, and gear up with the latest accessories.

The public can step inside a number of sailing boats, power boats and stands. Large vessels from the Armed Forces of Malta and a number of NGOs, private charters and other sea vessels will also be present.

Mr Mizzi said that when referring to the Maltese maritime sector, one has to not only mention the Maltese Ship Register, now the largest in Europe and one of the largest in the world, but also yachting, both as a destination and for repairs and maintenance. The Government was committed to improving and developing capabilities, and in investing in training and human capital.

“Transport Malta is committed to invest heavily in initiatives such as the Safety at Sea campaign that is yielding results. The main policy implemented by Transport Malta throughout this campaign is primarily based on the educational aspect of enforcement and taking proportionate action when required.

“This leads to a safer atmosphere benefiting all.”

Tickets for the boat show cost €2.50. For more information, visit www.vallettaboatshow.com.
