Almost 700 people were injured at work in the last three months of last year with most accidents occurring in the manufacturing and construction industries, according to the National Statistics Office.

The number of accidents dropped by 66, down from 748 in the last quarter of 2010 to 682 between last September and December.

Over 80 per cent of the accidents involved men and no fatalities were reported. The majority of non-fatal accidents at work occurred in manufacturing (168 cases) followed by construction (97), the wholesale and retail trade (74) and transport storage and communication (70).

The number of accidents decreased in all sectors when compared to the previous year, the NSO said.

Workers aged between 25 and 34 were the most likely to have an accident while at work. Wounds and superficial injuries, dislocations, strains and sprains were the most common types of injuries.

Companies employing 500 employees and more recorded the largest number of claims for accidents at work in the fourth quarter of 2011.
