More than 700 Gozitan schoolchildren will take part in the first science festival that opened yesterday.

Organised by the National Student Travel Foundation, NSTF Science Days in Gozo will run until tomorrow. Gozo’s school population is mainly made up of primary level students.

The foundation is the only national organisation active in promoting science in Malta through projects for school-children and students up to University level.

A total of 55 scientific projects will be on display

The event is taking place at the Gozo Ministry and will be open to the public tomorrow between 2pm and 8pm.

The project will again place Gozitan students at the centre of science popularisation to create motivational interest in the fun aspect and its practical and useful benefits to people’s daily lives.

In all, about 400 students are submitting entries to the Science Art Contest and Primary School Contest for Young Scientists and 15 students are taking part in the Secondary School Contest for Young Scientists and the School Lab organised in conjunction with the British Council. A total of 55 scientific projects will be on display and explained to the visitors by the students themselves while science communicators will hold interactive demonstrations.

Richard O’ Kennedy, from Ireland’s University of Enterprise and president of the London International Youth Science Forum, will deliver interactive science sessions on applied biochemistry while Mita and e-Learning will present robotics.
