There are 6,407 people working in remote gaming in Malta, consderably fewer than the figure of 9,000 given by the Malta Gaming Authority.

Replying to a Parliamentary Question by MP Edward Zammit Lewis, Prime Minister Joseph Muscat said that the Malta Gaming Authority figure includes indirect employment.

Only 865 of these 6,407 jobs were ‘land-based’ with the remainder being ‘remote’, according to the PQ.

The total is 72 per cent higher than the December 2014 figure.

Asked about the impact of the sector on rentals and the leisure industry, the prime minister said that the impact on rentals was being considered in the white paper currently in the pipeline.

Since March 2013, 193 remote gaming companies have opened on the island.
