At least 61 people were killed in a stampede when new year celebrations turned into a panicked stampede in Abidjan, Ivory Coast.

State radio and a fire department rescue worker, who refused to give his name, said many more people were injured.

The incident occurred at about 2am local time after a fireworks display in the Plateau district of Abidjan.
