A strong 6.3-magnitude quake struck yesterday west of Indonesia's Sumatra island, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) said, but there was no threat of a widespread destructive tsunami.

The USGS said the quake struck at a depth of 18.1 kilometres at 1629 GMT (11.29 p.m. local time) and put its epicentre 137 kilometres west-southwest of the port city of Bengkulu, in southern Sumatra.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre said there was no threat of a destructive widespread tsunami, and only "a very small possibility" of a local tsunami reaching coastlines within 100 kilometres of the epicentre.
