A 59-year-old man from Marsascala was today charged in court with raping a girl over a number of years and holding her against her will.

The girl turned 18 recently. The name of the accused cannot be published by court order.

Defence lawyer Charmaine Cherrett said the accused was a man of good character and did not have a criminal record. He, therefore should be granted bail.

Inspector Louise Calleja, prosecuting, said this was 'a classic case of abuse' where the aggressor would threaten the victim not to say anything.

The victim was the daughter of his former partner.

Magistrate Edwin Grima remanded him in custody.
