Just over half of the pupils who sat for Junior Lyceum resits have passed their exams, Education Minister Dolores Cristina said this morning.

This was the first time that resits were held.

The minister said 58.7 percent had passed. The minister said the passes from the resits meant that the pass rate from the Junior Lyceum exams was a record 73.7 percent, which was 12.5 percent higher than last year.

The resits were taken by 381 students of whom 199 had failed their maths exam and 182 failed in English.

A total of 2,356 pupils have now passed the exam.

Mrs Cristina said the success of the resits justified the decision to give the pupils a second chance.

The minister made her comments when she inspected works being carried out at the girls junior lyceum in Hamrun.

The works cost €350,000.
