Gharb local council has been granted €570,000 under EU cohesion funds to rehabilitate and improve accessibility to one of the most scenic - and little known - place in Gozo, Wied Il-Mielah.

The money will be spent on the second phase of a project which started with a clean-up of the valley and restoration of some field walls.

The valley had up to some time been hardly frequented because of sewage overflows.

Mayor David Apap told Parliamentary Secretary Chris Said during a tour of the valley that the council will continue with the rehabilitation of the area and will install solar-powered security cameras to deter vandalism.

It will also continue the rebuilding of field walls and bridges, resurface the roads and also improve access to the sea since this could be a popular diving site.

The idea, he said, was for the area to also become popular for country walks, thus improving the tourism product.
