By the end of 2014, 5,555 single parents were receiving social benefits, Family Minister Michael Farrugia told Clyde Puli (PN) yesterday.

Dr Farrugia added that by April this year the number had fallen to 5,184.

The global amount paid out in April was €59,663,421.

The number and type of benefits available to such single parents depended on a variety of means-tested factors.
