In the eight months since October 1, 2011, when the Divorce Law came into effect, there have been a total of 491 requests in Malta’s court for divorce, Justice Minister Chris Said told the original Bill’s promoter, Jeffrey Pullicino Orlando (PN), in reply to a parliamentary question.

Minister Said said the greatest number of applications, 346, had been made by separated persons; 93 jointly by separated couples; 37 by couples expecting separation; and 15 by parties not separated.

A total of 222 applications had been decided on to date: 162 by separated persons and 60 by separated couples.

Up to May 11 the Gozo courts had received 14 applications for divorce, of which 12 had been decided.
