Wirt Għawdex has been given €50,000 to restore two sites in Victoria which have been abandoned for years: the Loġġja tal-Palju and some of the war-time shelters.

Earlier this week, the restoration of the lighthouse in Gozo was also announced, and Gozo Minister Justyne Caruana vowed that the momentum would be kept up.

Il-Loġġja tal-Palju, also known as the Barrakka, was built in 1733, in the pper parts of what was Triq it-Tiġrija, now Triq ir-Repubblika, fil-Belt Victoria. Winners of horse races were presented with their prizes here, which consisted of damask banners. The upper sorey was added in later years.

The 32-room complex of World War II shelters lies below the San Martin bastion as you approach the main entrance to the Citadel. t was started in 1940 as a response to the increasing air raids, and along its 150m length, various families sought shelter during bombing attacks.
