Five people were killed and more than 30 others injured when a bomb targeting a candidate from an Islamist party exploded in north-west Pakistan, police said today.

The attack in Hangu town was the second in as many days targeting members of the Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam party in the north-west.

Police officer Fazal Naeem Khan said candidate Mufti Syed Janan was campaigning in a market in Hangu when the bomb went off.

It was not immediately clear whether he was wounded.

A bombing at a rally held by the party in the Kurram tribal region yesterday killed 25 people. The Pakistani Taliban claimed responsibility for that attack.

No-one has yet claimed responsibility for today's blast.
