The situation in Syria will be among the subjects to be discussed in the 5+5 meeting, which opens at Noon at the Auberge de Castille and continues at Verdala Castle.
Foreign Minister Tonio Borg told TVAM this morning that the final declaration is also expected to encourage further democratic reform in the N. African countries. He stressed however that the form of democracy could not be imposed on any country.
Other items for discussion are expected to include security issues and immigration.
The declaration will also call for closer dialogue between the European and N. African countries.
This will be the first meeting of West Mediterranean heads of state and of government since the Arab Spring last year.
