A total 4,335 babies were born last year, the biggest number in the past 13 years, health parliamentary secretary Chris Fearne said on the occasion of International Midwives Day today.

He said that 4,337 babies were born 14 years ago, in 2000. There were the least number of births in 2005 - 3,865.

Mr Fearne thanked midwives for their service saying they offered a holistic service including help to mothers during and after birth.
