Malta has been allocated €4.5 million under the European Economic Area (EEA) and Norwegian Financial Mechanisms for the period 2009-2014.
The aim of these mechanisms is to finance projects related to the themes of environmental protection and management, climate change and renewable energy, civil society, human and social development and the protection of cultural heritage.
The allocated amount of €4.5 million is an increase of 24 per cent on the €3.621 million received by Malta for the period 2004-2009.
A number of projects were financed during the period, including the conservation of Hal Saflieni Hypogeum, the implementation of the Schengen Acquis at the Malta International Airport, and the Master Plan for the Cittadella in Gozo.
Ambassador Richard Cachia Caruana, Permanent Representative of Malta to the European Union, welcomed the decision and said it represented the latest achievement in the government’s efforts to secure further funds which would continue to be used in projects that made a real difference in the quality of life of the Maltese and Gozitan people.
