An earthquake with a magnitude of 4.0 rattled the San Francisco Bay area today, the US Geological Survey said.

The quake's epicenter was one mile (two kilometers) north of El Cerrito, California at a depth of 5.5 miles (8.8 kilometers), the agency said.

It struck at 5:33 am (2.33 p.m. in Malta).
