A total of 34 councils have submitted their proposals to benefit from the scheme “Strengthening the Community. Regeneration in Government Housing Estates”, the Housing Authority said.

The councils are Marsa, Senglea, Qormi, Cospicua, Kirkop, Tarxien, San Ġwann, Siġġiewi, Birkirkara, Santa Luċija, Gudja, St Julian’s, Pietà, Victoria, Birzebbuġa, Għaxaq, Santa Venera, Żejtun, Mellieħa, Floriana, Ta’ Xbiex, Mqabba, Attard, Vittoriosa, Valletta, Rabat, Luqa, Marsaxlokk, Mtarfa, Żurrieq, Ħamrun,Paola, Mġarr and Żebbuġ.

In the last week of February the selection board will choose nine councils for work to be carried out in localities this year, according to the established criteria.

This year, the board will continue selecting councils for other projects next year and in 2013. The authority will then issue another call for new proposals.

The aim of the scheme is to strengthen the communities living in these estates. Financial assistance will be given to councils to invest in embellishment projects and to organize educational programmes for residents.

The authority said €675,000 were being dedicated for the six-year scheme annually.
