A new sewage treatment plant near Xghajra is to produce 34,000 tons of sludge per year which will be disposed of at the landfill at Ghallis, Parliament was told this evening.

Finance Minister Tonio Fenech said in reply to a parliamentary question by Anglu Farrugia (PL) that the building of the plant, at Ta' Barkat, is in an advanced stage.

The plant is expected to generate 34,000 tons of sludge annually and there is agreement with Wasteserv for this sludge to be disposed of at the landfill in Ghallis.

The minister said that that despite this agreement, the KSI was considering ways to treat the sludge to minimise its impact on the landfill and reduce the costs of its disposal.

The new plant will handle 85% of sewage produced in Malta.
