A 33-year-old man has been handed a suspended jail term and ordered to do community work after he admitted his involvement in three cases of insurance fraud.

Ivan DeGiovanni admitted to using false names, false qualifications or other means to defraud Atlas Insurance of €5,000, defrauded Untours Insurance of between €500 and €5,000 and attempted to defraud Gasan Mamo Insurance for a similar amount.

In handing down judgement, Magistrate Aaron Bugeja noted the guilty plea, the fact that the accused was cooperating with the police and was prepared to give evidence against other persons, and the fact that he had returned money he had received.

The accused was therefore sentenced to 20 months imprisonment suspended for two years and ordered  to do 300 hours of community work.
