A total of 271 parking spaces reserved for persons with disabilities have been withdrawn from 50 localities since March 2013, Transport Minister Joe Mizzi said this evening.

He told shadow minister Marthese Portelli in reply to a parliamentary question that this could have been due to several factors, such as the death of the permit holder or if it was found that the space was acquired in a fraudulent manner.

Ħamrun, San Pawl il-Baħar and Sliema topped the list with 47, 31 and 27 spaces respectively.

There other spaces retrieved were as follows:

Paola - 17, Msida – 13; Rabat – 11; Fgura – 10; Gżira – nine; Kalkara, Mosta, Naxxar and Zurrieq – six each; Balzan and Qormi – five each; Cospicua, Pieta, St Julian's, San Gwann, Valletta, Zabbar and Zejtun – four each; Birżebbuġa, Marsa, Qrendi, Swieqi, Xghajra and Zebbug (Malta) – three each; Vittoriosa, Birkirkara, Gharghur, Gudja, Senglea, Luqa , Mtarfa, Ta' Xbiex and Pembroke - two each; and Fontana, Floriana, Għajnsielem, Lija, Marsascala, Marsaxlokk, Mellieħa, Mġarr (Malta), Mqabba, Munxar, Victoria, Sannat, Santa Venera and Tarxien – one each.
