The government is allocating €250,000 for animal sanctuaries, Finance Minister Tonio Fenech announced in the Budget speech tonight - up from €200,000 to date.

He said that over the coming months the government will work on the completion of the €6m family park at Marsascala, build a new civic amenity site near the vegetable market and launch a plan to give every household equipment to save water.

Funds have been earmarked to help fishermen if a closed season for fishing for some types of fish is declared by the EU.

SPECIAL ASSISTANCE TO FARMERS

€400,000 will be given to farmers as subsidy on animal feed to counter the increase in international prices and control upward pressure on food prices.
