A total of 25 people have been injured - 11 of them seriously - after a bus accident on a motorway in the eastern German state of Saxony.

German news agency DAPD reported that a bus from Poland left the A4 highway near Hohenstein-Ernstthal early on Saturday morning and landed on its side in a ditch. The cause of the accident was not clear.

Police said the 11 severely injured passengers were taken to hospitals, while the others were taken to a nearby police precinct where they were examined by medical staff.

The bus was on its way from Dresden to Erfurt.
