A total of 14 wind warnings for the public and eight wind warnings for the marine sector were issued by the Meteorological Office last month.

The Met Office said in a statement that at 11.6 knots, the average wind speed in March was 1.4 knots higher than the climate norm.

This was the second highest March mean wind speed since 1970. The most frequent wind direction was from the west by north direction with a total of 46 hours. For 51 per cent of the time, the wind speed was greater than 10 knots.

The highest wind gust measured was 54 knots from the west by north direction and occurred on the March 15.

A total of 16.4mm of rain fell at Malta Airport, well below the climate March mean of 41mm. The wettest day for March was the 15th with a total of 5.4 mm.

The highest total March rainfall on record occurred in 1925 with a total of 178mm, while the driest one was that of 1977 with just 0.4 mm.

With a mean temperature of 15.1°C, March 2013 was warmer than the climate norm of 13.4°C. The highest temperature recorded last month was 23.5°C on the 28th and the lowest temperature was 5.6°C on the 17th

The lowest recoded grass minimum temperature was 1.7°C on the night of the 16/17th March.
