Between March 9, 2013 and last Wednesday, Transport Malta received a total of 22,183 SMSs reporting excessive emissions by vehicles on the roads.

Answering a parliamentary question by Marthese Portelli (PN), Transport Minister Joe Mizzi said that up to December last year 681 notifications had been issued for vehicles to undergo the relevant tests, including those that had already been the subject of first notifications.

A total of 155 restrictions had been implemented on the licences of vehicles that were not submitted to the tests following a second notification.

Minister Mizzi said 38 vehicles had failed the emissions tests. He added that every SMS cost its sender 5c.
