A young man from Żurrieq lost his life in a freak accident in which he reportedly fell and hit his head.

The incident happened in an area known as Fuq il-Ġibjun (Nigret) in Żurrieq, the police said.

They did not release the name of the man, who was 21 years old.

In a statement, they said they were alerted to the incident shortly after 4pm.

According to preliminary investigations, the young man was in the company of his friends when he lost his balance, fell to the ground and hit his head on a concrete floor.

He was taken to Mater Dei Hospital for treatment.

However, shortly afterwards, the police were informed that he had passed away.

Duty magistrate Marsanne Farrugia has appointed an inquiry while police investigations are under way to establish the facts surrounding the incident.
