The 2009 Beach Series, sponsored by Coke Zero, will kick off on Saturday at Golden Bay, Għajn Tuffieħa.

At a news conference held earlier this week, Björn Vassallo, one of the promoters, announced that a beach handball championship has been added to this year's programme which is scheduled to run until July 5. Other activities include Sportsbuzz, which is organised by the Kunsill Malti għall-Isport (KMS), and beach tennis.

A total of 14 teams will challenge for the title in the men's soccer tournament and four in the women's category. The beach handball championship will be contested by eight teams in the men's section and six in the women's category.

The KMS have decided to switch Sportsbuzz, one of its most popular sports programmes, to Golden Bay this summer. Launched recently, Sportsbuzz targets children from the Cottonera area with the aim of integrating them into a 'sporting world'.

Edward Borg, from General Soft Drinks, said his company was delighted to have extended its association with the Beach Series for another year.

"At GSD, we are committed to supporting initiatives that encourage participation in sports and physical activity," Borg said.

The Mellieħa Local Council will also take the opportunity to organise a sports event for residents of the locality during the Beach Series.
