Birkirkara's rise to the summit of Maltese football was rubberstamped on Wednesday when the newly-crowned champions were presented with the BOV Premier League trophy. Thousands of Birkirkara fans gathered at the National Stadium to celebrate their club's third league triumph which was sealed last week after a 1-0 victory over Tarxien Rainbows gave the Stripes an unassailable lead over Valletta. Wednesday's final league match produced six goals as Valletta beat Birkirkara 4-2 but the Citizens' win was only of scant consolation as centre-stage was taken by their rivals and their title feast. Birkirkara, led by coach Paul Zammit, finished the season with 45 points, one ahead of Valletta.
