Around 200 schoolchildren in Gozo have signed up for a subsidised robotics course which will teach them the basics of automation, coding and structural design.

The Robotica Nation course is offered by local training institute TCTC free-of-charge, with the Gozo Ministry choosing to cover costs for Gozo-based children.

In a statement announcing the course, the Ministry said that it aspired to turn Malta's sister island into a robotics hub and that it was therefore "essential that we encourage children to move into this sector."

The course is modelled on similar courses offered by TCTC which cost up to €400, said TCTC principal Ray Abela. Schoolchildren in Malta can enrol in the eight-week course for €50, thanks to local council subsidies.

Applications for the course closed today at noon.

Correction: A previous version of this article stated that Gozitan parents would have to pay a €10 fee when it is in fact a deposit.
