A total of 20 tonnes of salt was produced from two of the salt pans in Salina in 2017, well below the site’s full potential.

Replying to a parliamentary question by MP Chris Said, Environment Minister Jose' Herrera said that the salt pans at Salina could generate more salt than all the other sites in Malta put together.

No salt at all was collected in 2016.

The salt pans were restored by the EU’s Rural Development fund in 2015. However, the fund banned the creation of a dominant salt seller in the local market until 2020.

The salt pans are administered by BirdLife Malta.
