Twenty of the 26 members of the Administrative Law Enforcement unit of the police were transferred after the general election, the shadow minister for home affairs, Jason Azzopardi said in parliament this evening.

He was commenting on information given in reply to a parliamentary question.

Justice Minister Owen Bonnici, standing in for Home Affairs Minister Manuel Mallia, who is abroad, said he was confident the transfers were for genuine reasons as needed by the police force. Those reasons, he said, included security duties with the President and VIPs and duties in an EU mission in Kosovo.

He said 25 officers were transferred from various units to the ALE, meaning the size of the ALE increased by five officers.

Officers were moved to the ALE from police districts, the police garage, the rapid intervention unit and the CID. Other officers came from the Security Service or were reinstated officers.
