A total of 2,105 fines were issued last year against people who littered public places, figures given in Parliament show.

Another 155 were booked for depositing refuse for collection near (but not in) a bin, skip or other receptacle.

Just 10 were booked for dumping refuse, litter, swill or other material which could cause a nuisance or 'cause defacement of a public place'.

The figures show that 26 hawkers were fined for not keeping their immediate vicinity clean.

Strangely, the figures show two people having been booked for having collected refuse without authorisation.

Twenty-three were booked for depositing their refuse outside collecting time.
