The Sant’ Antnin waste recycling plant last year generated 1.1 million cubic metres of biogas, of which 620,000 cubic metres were methane.

These generated 1.55 GWhr of electricity and 1.39 GWhr of heat that was utilised to power the process.

Answering a parliamentary question by Labour MP Leo Brincat, Resources Minister George Pullicino said that as for Magħtab landfill, there had been the need to design a new model to estimate initial emissions, leading to a plant that would easily have handled 6,000 cubic metres of gas per hour.

But the amount of methane had declined to a small percentage of about 0.5 per cent. Still, last year the plant had resulted in some 2.1 GWhr of recovered thermal generation.
