I have come across this memorable photo of about 80 Malta Dockyard clerks, taken in January 1936. My late uncle Salvu Sammut, then 22, is first from right in the third row (from top). He was a great footballer who used to play for Sliema Wanderers. He was born in 1914 and died at the age of 29 in an accident at Corradino Hill while on his way from work to his home in St Andrews. He used to cycle to work every day.

In a week I found four people whose father appears in the photo. I am sure that had I had shown it to patrons of Jessie’s Bar, which I owned and where I used to work, more people would recognise members of their family.

I will be very glad to give them a photocopy of the photograph. My telephone number is 2137 4697.
