A 19-year-old man was this morning remanded in custody after he pleaded not guilty to the attempted murder of his mother's former boyfriend, 54-year-old Emanuel Schembri of Birzebbuga.

Liam Camilleri was also charged with seriously injuring Mr Schembri and carrying a knife without a license.

Mr Camilleri, his 49-year-old mother Judith and his bother Dean, 25 were charged with damaging Mr Schembri's car, harassing him and breaching the peace.

Judith and Dean admitted to the charges, Liam pleaded not guilty to all charges but, considering the seriousness of the charges, did not request bail.

Judith was given a five-month prison term suspended for 18 months and Dean was conditionally discharged for 18 months.

Sources said that the incident, which took place at the woman's house in Judge William Harding Street, Pembroke, followed an argument which took place after Mr Schembri went to confront the woman, who was now going out with somebody else, about which guy she wanted to be with.

The victim, who was stabbed in the chest and in his back, is in a stable condition and no longer in danger of losing his life.
